Joshua J. Provost is a cinematographer who exacts control over every factor that influences the image, from location and production design, through lighting and composition, and on to color timing and editing. He harnesses these influences to create images that seamlessly accent the tone and emotion of the story. Understated and radiant, or striking and visceral, he has succeeded in a variety of styles.
In Leonardo, he employed distant angles, subtle lighting, and ambitious underexposure matched with push processing to express the gritty underbelly of Rome nearly fifty years ago. With a painterly touch, he explored the world of a contract killer possessed of an artist’s mentality. His work netted top prize among an entire year’s worth of competitive films in all genres.
Provost has received awards for cinematography, editing, writing and acting. He is busy preparing to shoot a number of films this year, and is writing a docudrama about a photojournalist’s expedition to interview young rebel Fidel Castro.
